I always loved that there was a Volcano Goddess called Pele. As an angsty teenager I envisioned boys being sacrificed to her while listening to Tori Amos’ 1996 Album ‘Boys for Pele’. When I saw Brendan Foster’s ode to fashion goddess meets island getaway with muse Gabrielle Sullivan rolling on that white sand with flecks of black volcanic memory through it, it brought me back there once again.
Below are Brendan’s words on their little island hopping adventure to find some white sand among an archipelago of volcanic black sand ~ personally I’m delighted that some black flecks remained, it took me back to one of my fave albums of all time, and had me wondering once again on the Volcano deity, Pele… and who those boys were that Tori wished upon her fiery depths. xx Lizzy
Story by Brendan Foster:
The winter had settled in back in my hometown so this meant for a little exploration abroad. Travelling to Indonesia meant trying to find a white sandy beach amongst all the black sand beaches that surround the mainland. After searching around for a week with no luck I decided to re-locate the shoot to one of the smaller islands.
Upon arrival on the island we were quickly faced with a problem of accommodation. With limited time to find a place to stay we decided to just wing it when we got there. Soon enough the realisation that the whole island was booked out kicked in. 2 hours of slight panic followed and we got a room at the only place left on the island. Fortunately enough the resort had a ‘secret beach’ which ended up being the perfect location for the shoot.
