Bali is a beautiful blend of nature with a vibrant cultural tapestry woven with traditions, both ancient and alive. Here there is a sense of magic in the air and a place we often find ourselves returning to time and time again. Our long time friend Natascha who calls Bali home showed us her three favourite locally owned businesses and why you need to visit them the next time you find yourself in Bali.

Eat
Nasi Tékor Badak is a purpose driven restaurant with a heartfelt mission to preserve sustainable Balinese lifestyle and culture, known as the Tri Hita Karana concept. This vision is beautifully woven into every aspect of the restaurant, from its culinary concept and its interior design and is also reflected in its educational initiatives and authentic experiences offered.

Combining traditional and modern elements, the Nasi Tékor Badak is inspired by its origins in the Kertalangu Cultural Village, where, in the past, the market was a means of interaction, a center for education, culture and art. The restaurant embraces a traditional approach to cooking, utilizing open fire and eschewing modern equipment or electricity, allowing diners to connect with the way food was once prepared. Located in the heart of Denpasar, Nasi Tékor Badak invites you on a nostalgic journey through culinary history. Their motto, “Processed from the Past, Taste of the Present, Culinary of the Future,” captures the essence of their mission.

Silversmithing is a cherished trade in Bali, with a history that spans centuries. This craft has been lovingly passed down through generations, allowing Balinese silversmiths to draw deeply from their rich cultural heritage. Their designs often incorporate elements of Hindu mythology, nature, and everyday life, resulting in intricate patterns and symbolic motifs that tell meaningful stories. Each finely crafted piece serves to preserve and celebrate the island’s cultural narrative with many artisans also offering workshops where we can learn the art.

Shop
Pasar Kodok - which literally translates to Frog Market is Bali’s best place to thrift. This purely second-hand market is located in Tabanan, known for its vibrant atmosphere, this market offers an eclectic mix of items, denim, shirts, dresses, branded sport tee’s, shoes and accessories like belts, handbags and hats. It’s a great place for anyone interested in sustainable shopping, at Pasar Kodok you can treasure hunt for unique pieces while experiencing a taste of local life.
Visiting this market provides a unique glimpse into the everyday culture of Tabanan, allowing you to interact with local vendors and experience the lively atmosphere of a traditional Balinese market. Hidden in the busy streets of Tabanan, this market is almost never busy. Bring water, as the market is outdoors and open during the heat of the day, sometimes you will find vendors taking a nap, but they don’t mind being woken to make a sale. Here you can take it slow, grab some local snacks in between, and have a fresh Kelapa Muda (young coconut). Whether you're on the hunt for a specific item or simply enjoying the atmosphere, Pasar Kodok is a great place to visit.
